Rita Bhatia

Rita Bhatia brings some 30 years of experience in managing public nutrition programmes working with Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), and UN agencies dedicated to protection, food security, nutrition, education and HIV and AIDS. Her career emphasis has been on conceptualization, planning, management and evaluation of programmes. Rita believes in coaching and mentoring young public nutrition professionals.

Rita started public nutrition career in India with Catholic Relief Services followed by working as a technical advisor to Ministry of Social Welfare in India’s largest nutrition social safety programme “Integrated Child Development Scheme”. Since 1981 she has been working in the International public nutrition with International NGOs, UN Border Relief Operation (UNBRO) on Thai Cambodian Border, UNHCR and WFP around the world.
During her positions in WFP in Rome and in Asia Bureau-Thailand, Rita provided leadership in public nutrition and health. The jobs entailed developing policies and strategies, fostering inter-agency collaboration, providing technical support, undertaking training and workshops, leading food security and nutrition assessment and monitoring and evaluating programmes.

In UNHCR, Rita managed major refugee emergencies during the 1990s and was involved in some of the most important developments in the emergency food and nutrition during this period. She headed the Nutrition Units in at the headquarters in Geneva and in the Horn of Africa, and subsequently took on a coordinating role as the Senior Emergency Preparedness and Response Officer until her departure. Managed major nutrition emergency operations in Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Bangladesh, Nepal, Gulf crisis, Great Lakes (Goma, Rwanda, Burundi, and Tanzania), Balkans (Bosnia, Kosovo), and East Timor, Indonesia (West Timor).
Rita has Masters in Nutrition from Lady Irwin College, New Delhi, India and in Social Development from University of Wales, Department of Development Studies, United Kingdom.
