Phil McKinney

Over the past 10years Phil McKinney has gained a wide experience with a number of NGOs and UN agencies (UNICEF, WFP and FAO).  Originating from Belfast, Ireland, his main working language is English but has some basic skills in French.  Phil McKinney’s holds a MSc (Med Sci) Public Health Nutrition and his primary expertise is in food security and nutrition assessments, having been lead analyst and team leader for numerous national and regional assessments.  This expertise also extends to the development, technical guidance and appraising of national level nutrition and food security surveillance systems, as well as appraisal of nutritional programming and using surveillance data for policy papers.  He is also skilled in the use and development of various tools for use in measuring nutritional status and dietary assessment. 

The majority of this work has been done in cooperation with national government with the view to build capacity.  With the majority of Phil McKinney’s work focusing in the Horn or Africa he is specialized in pastoral populations, carrying out work on pastoral diets and relating dietary diversity to food access and nutritional status.  His experience also extends to Central Asia and West Africa.  Phil McKinney also guest lectures at the University of Glasgow on Nutritional Surveillance.
