2023-2026/Eastern and Southern Africa region/UNICEF
The nutrition impacts of climate change related disasters are already being felt in the Eastern and Southern Africa region, with the increase in severity and frequency of extreme events in recent years. As a result, UNICEF has contracted NutritionWorks for support on climate change and nutrition. In Phase 1 this support included a draft framework to guide climate change and nutrition programming and the development of a training package to help UNICEF Country Offices and partners understand key concepts and to learn how to identify climate nutrition actions. Two pilot trainings were carried out in Madagascar and Ethiopia. In Phase 2 of the support trainings were carried out in Somalia,Uganda and A review of the evidence of the impact of climate change on maternal and child nutrition was also undertaken. A further review was also carried out that looked at the evidence for how actions across the food, health social protection and education impact both nutrition and climate outcomes. In Phase 3, NutritionWorks is supporting UNICEF to identify and address research gaps regarding climate nutrition actions drawing on the evidence reviews carried out in the previous phase and to develop case studies identifying promising practices that are currently being done.
